Research How professional artists/designers present, promote, manage and sell their work.
Within this section of this particular unit I shall be investigating and researching a particular artist and their work. My main aim is to understand and find out how the particular artist sells and promotes their work whilst also gaining an insight in the artists particular background and nature of their work. This task is important to perform in orer to understand “How the market works” within the art world as all the information gained shall help me with my animation and promotion of work. As part of this section of the unit I also plan to investigate in how the particular artist that I have chosen works and manages themselves. This is an important aspect to analyse in my opinion due to the professionalism needed to be successful within this particular profession in order to find work for companies and/or be able to successfully promote your work and get it noticed. I shall also independantly identify and research an extensive range of sources that are carefully analysed.
The Artist - indepth analysis of the artist
The artist I have chosen to analyse and investigate into is the Australian painter Peter Churcher. The main reason to which I decided to investigate into this specific artist rather than that of a more common artist such as Banksy or Picasso was due to the diverse background and lifestyle the artist has to myself and many other artists. As I found it important to research an artist who shares little similarities in lifestyle to that of myself ,I had realised that this would enable me to further and broaden my knowledge and research as I was able to learn about a new culture and understand how the particular artist promotes, exhibits and sells his work.
Peter Churcher was born in 1964 in Brisbane, Australia , where he started to produce art at the age of seven. Peter incorporates a realistic style within his portraits and figures which I particularly find visual mesmerising and consuming, moreover, this could possibly be one of the reasons why many are drawn in to Peter churchers artwork.
How does Peter churcher present, promote and sell his work?
Peter Churcher's work is represented in many major public, corporate and private collections throughout Australia and overseas including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, The National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, and several private collections within the states and New zealand. This promotional element of Churchers work has definately made me contemplate my promotional methods in terms of getting my work displayed and noticed. This empirical research had shaped my way of thinking as I have certainly taken more thought of the clear importance of displaying my work in a suitable and successful manner. The distribution method of Churchers work can definately be something that can be applied to that of my own work and project. This research has led me to believe that alternative methods of presenting, promoting and selling work could possibly enable me to gain aknowledgement from many who otherwise would not be able to view my artwork. I have found that this stage of the "artist life" is crucial in establishing themselves within the industry as presenting and promoting in a successful manner is the ultimate goal for an aspiring artist.
One element to the selling of Churchers artwork that I find dynamic and unique to that of the common method of distributing artwork is how most of his artwork is selectively commissioned to private owners and art galleries across the world. From a critical perspective I had my doubts about this specific method of selling artwork as there was a lack of appeal due to the simple ways of simply selling to collectors and galleries without really " testing the market" as such. As I analaysed and investigated with greater depth I realised how diverse and copious this market is. As there is always a high demand of artwork needed for galleries and collections (again for a variety of reasons) for the artist It can be greatly beneficial and simple to sell artwork within this sector of the industry as high demand ultimately means the artist can easily sell work and make a large sum of money quickly. The factors of money and time have also got to fall into the equasion and be of some consideration to the artists when they promote and try to sell their work. As I have continued with this investigation of such artists and how they distribute, present and promote work I have come to realise that there are a variety of factors that we must take into consideration in order to fully understand the potential of the market to which we are distributing work.
How does his art relate to my work and how can I apply his work to that of my own ?
I specifically chose Peter Churcher to focus on within this section of promoting, selling and presenting due to his success within the artistic market and within the industry on a general level. His artistic techniques on canvas have enabled Churcher to succeed and establish himself off the canvas. I believe that Churchers ability to produce the essence of realism within his work has generated interest from a large, diverse audience from multi-cultural backgrounds as he explores the human body and raw emotions we express perfectly within his artwork. The subtlety of Peter churchers artwork such as jay with skull ,2005, (above left) and true balance of combining tones and textures enthasise the artworks symbolism and originality whilst also being able to produce something that has true depth and a slight twist on that of a traditional piece of artwork. All of this as described are things that I can incorporate in order to enable my work to flow and have greater meaning. This would certainly add an extra quality to my work where upon the combinations of tone and texture would enable me to continue to produce better work for both my client and future clients.
Peter churchers work definately relates to my own work on many levels. His true passion for oil painting and other media forms has formiddably inspired me with my own creations and ideas. On the development side of this I do believe that Churchers ability to explore a detailed range of expressions, atmospheres and attitudes (along with feeling and emotion) on canvas has made me think more about how my own ideas and expressions can be portrayed through my work. Pablo Picasso once said - "Are we to paint what's on the face, what's inside the face, or what's behind it?" My response to this quote and belief is that churcher expresses all three of these factors within his artwork. Churcher In my opinion undoubtedly expresses a set period in time, expression or collection of feelings with all three of these factors of Picasso's in mind as he executes his paintings to a quality that has inspired me and my way of producing various artwork ect for this project and undoubtedly others to come.
The artist:Margaret Licha, designer and ceramic tile artist
After extensively researching and understanding how Peter churcher presents, promotes and sells his work I have decided to explore a different type of artist in order to fully understand a how a extensive range of artists and designers promote, sell and present their work. The importance of exploring a variety of artists is key in developing my own project and artwork as the tools I have and will gain enable my work to be a higher standard and level to what I have been working at. This in favour will give me the tools to produce a greater quality of work in the future as I have understood the importance of tone and composition within my work and also understood the market itself and how artists are able to successfully generate sales and profits from their artwork.
I particularly chose Margaret Licha to study and analyse in detail due to her selective artistic style as her Ceramic tile artwork is something that I am curious to explore and is something I may wish to think about when contemplating what technique I wish to use next within this project I am undertaking.Margarets passion and artistic sensibiliy were two things that drew me into researching extensively about her as Margaret Licha's artwork speaks for itself within the contemporary artworld.
Margaret Licha's artwork is currently promoted and sold on her website (www.margaretlichatile.com) and in many craft shops across the USA. As the age of technology and more specifically that of the internet has come upon us I found it relevant to include an artist that sells their work to a global market with the help of the internet as this factor of promoting and selling world cannot be ignored or excluded within todays society. whilst analysing how many artists sell, present and promote their work due to its dominance and influence of the internet over the artistic market, I have found that the benefit of doing so is large as the artist is able to present their work to everyone and anyone who is able to access the internet , which therefore generates sales ,which in turn helps to promote their work and the artist. Without such access to the internet and Margarets website I would not have been able to access various information about her and/or been able to anlayse her artwork on such an intricate and detailed level.
This has made me assess how I could possibly promote and sell work as, after observing Margarets tile website, I have been inspired by the thought of producing my own website in order to attract a larger audience of people and promote my work, as this in favour could also attract future clients and more work possibilities. Even though Margarets techniques and finished pieces of art aren't similar to that of my own creations I still believe her work does relate to my own and can/does inspire me and what work I do. I believe it relates to that of my own due to processes of which Maragret produce her artwork, as we both firstly design the image we wish to produce then move on to layering our artwork in several stages I believe we share a similar technique in this sense. Maragret Lichas raw passion for her artwork and passion of the inspiration she uses for tiling (animals) allows Licha to explore her creativity and artistic capabilities where upon Margarets pieces are always individual and different.
Margaret Licha's ability to deploy various techniques and natural ability to produce an image with self express and aesthetic realism has enable me to think more about how I could possibly stylize and individualize my work from the rest so I stamp my own style for others to be interested in.The excogitate way in which Margaret has produced her work is something that I believe relates and link well with my own, however after judging her work accordingly I believe Margarets techniques deployed and use of various materials is something I wish to incorporate within my own work.
Overall, Maragarets unconventional methods and process of presenting, promoting and selling of work have undoubtedly made me assess and re-think about the possible ways in which I can do the same for my own work as the key aspect that has caught my attention is the fact that ( as seen in Margarets work)there is no one method way in which I could sell , promote and present my work. Thanks to the new media's that have erose from the 21st century it is now possible to trarget any group or set of people from anywhere in the world.
Indepth Analysis of the artist
The artist: Richard Price, Painter
At the age of 11 Richard Price started drawing and painting from observations of a local fishing fleet at Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Encouraged to simply paint ‘anything’ Price quickly was drawn to paint atmospheric conditions and produce light effects with paint ect. Richard Price's later decided to study at Portsmouth where he developed an interest in interiors, portraiture and figure painting . In fact his degree show was a show of portraits and figure paintings. The everyday people, situations and places were his subjects.I particularly chose Richard Price o research as his presentation, promotion and management style of his work is something to which I aspire to do to that of my own.
How does Richard Price present, promote, manage and sell his work?
Richard Price has found success in his work and in the actual selling of his artwork to the public. After extensive research I have found that Richard has various methods in the actual selling of his work. His paintings do go on sale to the public and have been comissioned off to private galleries ect. His style and creativety within this department has influence my decisions on how I could possible manage and promote my artwork as it is possible to sell any piece of artwork with the help of a good marketing plan and good management.
so how does Richard present his work?
Richard key to successfully presenting his work to the public is due to array of market areas he targets. With many po
eple after artwork of his such as " the arcade" or "summer market" it is vital for Richard to present his work so that everyone is able to observe his creations. One method of presenting his work is through the use of the internet. As I searched Richards website I found that his artwork was being displayed on one of his pages and presented to a global market of people. The benefit of being able to present such artwork on the internet to a global market is the fact that everyone who is ale to access a computer can observe Richards artwork in the comfort of their own homes. From a marketing perspective I believe that this method of presenting can benefit the promotion and selling of Richard Price's work as he is able to promote and present his work to a vast amount of people who could be potentially interested in buying his artwork. I believe that this can be beneficial for my project as this has made me more aknowledged about the various ways in which we can present artwork than that of normal ways commonly seen. This could also effect my project as it has enabled me to understand the importance of the internet and the possibilites that are on offer within this market.
Another way in which Richard Price presents his work is through various exhibitions that happen throughout the country. Recently Richards work has been displayed in galleries such as the Manya Igel Fine Arts gallery and various other galleries situated across the uk. I believe that this type of presentation and 'exhibition' is important in the existance of the art world as many still flock to see Richards and various other artists work within these important galleries. The way in which the artworld has changed has somewhat left a flaw within the market as many wish to observe artwork online without the passion to visit the galleries. This is ultimately one of the most important factors of present and exhibiting artwork for all to see as the austhetic value that we can see when we are personally up close to the image is soemthing that cannot and should not be replicated in any other form. I personally believe that it is crucial to continue to display artists work within these conditions found within art exhibitions and galleries as they offer an experience for any art lover that cannot be matched. I believe this is one aspect that Richard addresses well as he has decided to use multiple presentation techniques from the internet to exhibitions, shows and various artwork within selected galleries to present his artworld to the public.
How does Richard Price promote his artwork?
Richards method of promotion is similar to that of his presentation of his artwork. Richards understanding for the way in which he should promote his artwork to the public has enabled him to promote to a large amount of people, thanks to the help of various promotional influences (being that of the internet, galleries and shows). The internet has enabled Richard to successfully promote his artwork on an international level. This modern way of promoting can enable Richard to promote his artwork in a professional manner as his website allows him to creatively present and promote artwork that everyone is able to observe. From an artists persepctive I believe that this method of promotion can benefit an artist and their overall success within the market. As times for an artist within todays society are hard ( due to competition and the vast array of artwork/artforms out there) it is important to promote in a place that is fitting with the current market. As the internet is used commonly by artwork collectors and people who just wish to buy a painting due to its design it is vital for an artist to promote their artwork on the internet in order to have any potential chance of success. richard does this well and is 'up to date' with the industry as his artwork seems to be selling well on his website. This use of promotion on the internet can determine whether an artists work is going to be a success or a failure as, due to market changes, it is undoubtedly important to promote artwork on the internet and other different platforms in order to be a successful artist.
How does Richard price manage his artwork?
From an artists perspective one of the most important attributes to have within the industry is to be good at being able to manage the flow of his artwork and manage his career. Richard has been successful within this aspect of his life as he has undoubtedly handled himself particularly well in his circumstances. Richard ability to handle the lifestyle of an artist has enabled Richard to continue with projects and artwork whilst maintaining a steady flow of interest and buyers. I certainly have to adress how I am going to manage my own artwork and project as planning is essential in order to maintain interest in potential clients.
Alot of Richards artwork is often presented and managed in a professional manner which allows Richard to focus on his audience and artwork within the future. As most of his collection is included on his website ,Richard can manage his artwork from home without the various problems that may arise him without this platform. After researching into Richards management methods I do believe that the ability of being able to manage a collection of artwork on through the internet and a dedicated website could be something in which I should consider. This would allow me to present, promote, manage and sell my work effectively as it could all be arranged by a click of a button. This method could also cut down the issue of time and funding as in todays society it is relatively cheap to produce a functioning website for the world to view.
How does Richard Price sell his artwork?
Richard ( as extensively researched above) sells his artwork through a variety of platforms and methods. His website enables Richard to beneficially sell his work to an array of people on a global level as his artwork can be easily displayed to a vast amount of people thanks to his website. Alongside the use of the internet to sell his artwork, Richard also sells his work through various shows and auction houses. I found this to be an interesting way in which to sell a piece of art as Richard truly does go the extra mile to sell his art on a regular basis. One thing that I have learnt from such an artist is the possibilities to which we are able to distribute artwork to anyone. As the market is expanding and technological advancements mean that it is possible to sell artwork to everyone I find it important to use a variety of methods to sell my artwork or atleast present and promote my artowork as this is a technique that should be adopted in order to potentially be successful within the contemporary artworld.
How does his art relate to my work and how can I apply his work to that of my own
I specifically chose Richard Price to investigate as his imaginative and expressive artwork is something that I can relate to. I believe that the way that Richard Price manages, present, promotes and sells his artowork is innovative and something to be admired. I believe such thought
s as his attitude and relationship for art is something that is reflected within his artwork itself and something that I too can relate to with that of my own work and existing project. The way in which Richard expresses what he sees around him is influencial to what I wish to capture within my artwork and express the same passion within my current project for my client. I can relate to Richard Price's artwork as his rich tones, textures and overall quality and passion for this artform is similar to what I aim to create within my own work. In terms of presenting, exhibiting and also selling his work, Richards artistic capabilities are something that I wish to obtain within the future. I can relate to his artistic career as I too have to exhibit, present and promote my work to a client for my project. After investigation I have come to realise how the artists I have analysed are similar to myself in terms of exhibiting and promoting their work. I can relate to the importance of producing a quality finished piece of artwork, understanding how to attract an audience and how to present and exhibit artwork thanks to these extensive investigations into the artists I have researched throughout the project.
John Bird
I specifically chose John Bird due to his varied approach to producing, presenting, promoting and selling his artwork.John followed a career in professional football for thirty years, playing for Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End, Newcastle United and Hartlepool. John Bird then managed Hartlepool United, York City and Halifax Town before becoming a full time artist.
During his time at Newcastle United he opened his very own Art Gallery, in which he successfully ran for eight years holding several exhibitions. His unique artistic style is portrayed within his work as he captures elements of atmosphere materfully by deploying techniques
How does John Bird sell his artwork?
His paintings have been sold all over the world, recipients include Prince Edward and the Duchess of Wessex, The Governor of Hong Kong, Lesley Garrett and Russell Crowe. Many companies have commissioned him, including Allied Irish Banks, Barclays Bank and Newcastle United F.C.
