With any portfolio work It is vital to present and display the work within in the most professional manner. All aspects of design, use of colour , layout and style has to be integrated within the portfolio in order to present the work effectively. Within this section I shall be extensively investigating and explaining how to produce and present a portfolio of work for a degree/university course.
The benefits of effectively producing and presenting a portfolio of work
With a professionally constructed and presented portfolio of work an array of opportunities will arise. As the current industry and various art programme wish to see a cleverly displayed and planned out portfolio of work it is vital for your portfolio to capture the innovative, creative and imaginative mind of the artist. As places on courses are limited within the current conditions it is also important for the artist/candidate to present their work in the most creative manner in order to distinguish their portfolio from the rest in order to gain a place on a degree course ect.How to present/ produce a portfolio of work for a foundation/degree interview
Even though an important aspect of the interview is about yourself and how you present and express your creativity through discussion and personality it is equally important for the portfolio to be of a high quality. As the interviewer may conduct a vast amount of interviewers with potential candidates it is vital for the candidate to differentiate their work from the rest. Taking this into account it is equally important to note that they must do so in a professional manner that is still effective, innovative and imaginative in order for the interviewer to be impressed by the portfolio of work that you have presented and produced. Below is a break down of all the different elements that should be looked at in order to present and produce a portfolio of high quality.
First page in which I would present and produce my portfolio. This is the first page for my portfolio in which I would present my artwork. The simplistic layout enables the viewer to see the work in the most effective way. I have broken down the key aspects below in which to make this look effective
The Layout of the portfolio
One of the most important aspects to consider within the production of the portfolio is the actual layout of the designs, images annotations and text. Aesthetically, it is important for any candidate to be unique and creative with how they present and construct the work. An effective and carefully layed out portfolio enables the university to observe the work in a way which visually flows throughout the portfolio. The layout of the portfolio is also important in order to capture the attention of the interviewer as the portfolio should be innovative and eye catching from the beginning of the portfolio to the end.
The second page

As you can see from the image to the left, this is what the second page of the portfolio would look like. The structure and overall layout of this portfolio has meant that the text is easily distinguished from the images in a way which is professionally and creatively presentable to the interviewer. An aspect of the the layout of image, design, text and various other annotations to consider is the importance of being creative and expressive. The university want to see a professionally constructed portfolio that shows clear and detailed attention to the layout as this is key to enable the work within to be shown in the most visually pleasing manner. An important aspect to note is the importance of communicating effectively within the portfolio to the intended audience. As the "intended audience" within this particular situation is the interviewer and/or university it is important to present and effectively design/layout work which is suitable for the requirements of the university. Even though your work may look visually pleasing and show elements of the candidate being innovate and imaginative with how they lay the portfolio out, it is equally important to produce and lay the work out based around the needs and requirements of the university. If the portfolio is not produced with the intended audience ( university) in mind then they may believe that it looks UN professional as they may believe that the candidate is not the right person for the potential place on the course. All these little factors of design and layout of the portfolio are key in pleasing the interviewer and presenting a creative and imaginative portfolio that expresses the innovative and artist mind of the candidate for the degree course.
The use of colour to effectively present a portfolio of work
Along with the important factor of laying out the portfolio effectively it is equally important to consider the aspect of presentation with the consideration of colour. Colour has a variety of benefits within a portfolio of work as it .....
- Separates the text, images, annotations and designs within the portfolio from page to page- The use of colour is used to distinguish the difference between the work within the portfolio so that the interviewer can observe the portfolio effectively.
It Can be used to make the portfolio look innovate - The possibilities with the use of colour are endless. Every artist has a different style and within the interview this needs to be portrayed. As it is important to reflect your style in the most professional and creative manner it is important to make the portfolio innovative. This may be due to using coloured card, paper and material ect with cardboard underneath in order to raise the image, design and/or text so that it gives a greater aesthetic feel to the portfolio.
- Makes your portfolio individual - The universities wish to see a candidate that has their own style ( that is of a high standard). The use of colour effectively could ultimately decide whether or not you are suitable for the course as it gives the portfolio a professional finish (when used and combined appropriately). The use of colour gives style and individualism to a portfolio of work as this enables the university to see what styles and techniques you deploy with the portfolio and how you execute the task of effectively producing a portfolio that is of a high quality.
Taking these into consideration will enable the portfolio to reflect the creativity and imagination of the potential candidate as this factor is vital in order to produce a portfolio that is captivating and visually interesting and unique from the beginning to the end. The consideration and contribution of the effective use of colour could ultimately enable the candidate to gain a place on the course, as this will enable the portfolio of work to be of a creative and higher standard than that of a portfolio without this attention to the use of colour.
As you can see from the image to the left, it is important to focus on the layout and use of colour within a portfolio. This articular candidate has effectively distinguished the text from the images in a manner which enables the university to be able to observe the page fluently. The way that colour is deployed and effective incorporated within this portfolio shows a clear understanding and creative ability to apply the conventions in order to produce a professional portfolio of work. The combination of both factors of layout design and effective use of colour give a creative and professional quality to the portfolio. The way in which the work is presented gives a positive reflection of the candidate as the universities wish to see a portfolio that is reflective of the candidates abilities, techniques and style. Being able to professionally, innovative and creatively produce a portfolio for a degree interview will give the candidate a better chance in succeeding and making it onto the course.
Innovation, imagination and creativity with producing a portfolio of work for a degree interview
One of the most important factors to realised with developing and producing a professional portfolio for degree courses is the integration of deploying your own style and imagination into the portfolio. One of the most important elements of presenting a portfolio within an interview is portraying your own style and imagination within the portfolio as a whole. As the university wish to see the most creative and high quality pieces of work within the interview it is important to display a range of work that has depth and a true variety of methods and styles incorporated within to ensure a successful interview. The sections below describe what must be done to ensure that the portfolio shows the creative, imaginative and innovative side of the artist.
One of the most important details to consider is the appeal to the target audience. As this select group of people are the ones in which I am going to have to successfully " win over", it is vital for me to effectively present my work to a high standard. One way in which I could communicate is through imaginative and professional display work. If I were to present my work in an innovative and stunning manner to the audience, this would impress my taregt audience and would enable them to be attracted to my work.
As It is vital for me to present my work in the most appropriate and imaginative manner, whilst also displaying the work in a profession way I must assess the ways in which I present into greater detail. Doing so (like what I have done above)will potentially generate further interest from the target audience.
The ways in which I have designed and produced examples for how I wish to present to the target audience (portfolio images above), I believe will creatively and imaginatively display my work in the best possible manner. This in favour will therefore generate further interest from the target audience as this style of presentation will effectively communicate with the appeals of the intended audience.
